In this day and age is spelling words correctly still important? With the rise of text speak, don’t we just need to communicate the message correctly?

Well, sorry, but it does matter. People will form an unfavourable impression of you if you are unable to spell at least commonplace words (and you can always use a dictionary for less frequent ones).
Good spelling aids reading and reading aids spelling – a virtuous circle you could say. So read as much as you can and read things you enjoy – books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, just read.

Spelling is very important to me. I feel terrible whenever I misspell words I’m supposed to know. I even switched off my iPhone’s spell checker, so I have to use a dictionary whenever I’m not sure. I’m not a native speaker and I find it hard to read my friends’ emails and texts when there’s something wrong with spelling. Reading books in English helps a lot, even though I worry that I may fine writing in Russian more challenging some day.
Yes, the iPhone sometimes refuses to believe me and makes the decision for me as to which word I am trying to spell…
